Reflection Activity #1

Art is Movement

This activity requires moving your body and using your imagination. Do this alone or with a friend.

Pretend you have a small treasure. It could be a cup, keys, or spoon. Imagine you have thin thread. Wrap the thread around your tiny object. Wrap and wrap the thread until you can only see a tiny part of your object.

Grab another imaginary object. It could be big or small. Grab imaginary shoes, pine cones, or pieces of wood and cardboard. Grab some imaginary yarn. Use the rope to combine your new object with your tiny wrapped treasure. Use your body to reach around and around the object, adding more and more layers. Wrap and wrap until you have one wrapped object. Add imaginary rope. Grab more imaginary objects. Tie them into your big wrapped sculpture.

What shape is your wrapped sculpture? Can you see what’s inside?

Reflection Activity #2

Expressing Feelings Through Art

Gather your favorite art materials. You can use paper and pencils, clay, embroidery, and more. Judith Scott combined objects together with yarn and other types of string. To practice Judith’s technique, use shoelace or thread and whatever small objects you find around you.

Use your materials to express these feelings:

  • I feel tired
  • I feel excited
  • I feel hungry
  • I feel understood
  • I feel like a bird
  • I feel purple

Reflection Activity #3

Observing Feelings Through Art

This activity does not require making art. Do this activity alone or with a friend.

How do each of these pieces of art make you feel? Hold the feelings in your mind, write them down, or talk about it with your friend.

Reflection Activity #4

Sharing Feelings Through Art

Do this activity with a friend. Using your favorite materials, make art about different feelings, like the ones in Reflection Activity #1. Take turns or create at the same time. Try to guess the feelings your friend is showing you through their art. This activity can be done without words. You can use your body and your face to share what you’re thinking and feeling. It is okay if you are unsure what feelings your friend’s art is expressing. Focus on being present with your friend and your art.
