"Judith Scott’s work — both delicate and monumental, replete with images of the wrapped parcel, the chrysalis, what’s both bound and free — is part of our cultural heritage of sculpture. Her life is also a testament to another heritage: big changes in American social history and in shifting ideas about personhood in modernity.”
- Sara Hendren, Author of What a Body Can Do
Judith Scott's work and practice have been categorized in many ways. She has been called an important figure in the feminist art movement, in the craft art movement, in disability art, in sculpture, and in the Oakland art world and beyond. Additionally, she is one of the most famous people with Down syndrome, as well as a notable Deaf artist.
Her work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in New York in a retrospective exhibition and is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian in Washington DC, among many others. She has also shown at Gugging, Austria; the Museum of Everything, London; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; White Columns, Barbara Gladstone Gallery, Gavin Brown’s enterprise, Ricco Maresca, New York: and Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco.
While her life story has fascinated and touched many, and serves as both an inspiration as well as a reminder of how far we have come as a society since the time in which she was born, none of this would have been possible if her art had not touched someone first.
