“Judith Scott’s work — both delicate and monumental, replete with images of the wrapped parcel, the chrysalis, what’s both bound and free — is part of our cultural heritage of sculpture. Her life is also a testament to another heritage: big changes in American social history and in shifting ideas about personhood in modernity.”
- Sara Hendren, Author of What a Body Can Do
The work of Judith Scott has been categorized in many ways.
- JS is one of the most well known artists with Down syndrome
- her reach likely impacted how other artists with disabilities were positioned and respected in the art world
- outsider art, self-taught artist more informative
- mainstream professional art
- fiber art history in bay area & how js connects to that
- Arts and crafts movement -> The bay area -> CCAC-> fiber art -> craft -> wider artistic community -> 2nd wave feminism -> deinstitutionalization -> CG -> Judith Scott
- JS was here when Ed Roberts was doing his thing!!
