The daily act of dressing—often overlooked or habitual—becomes a site of transformation in The Semiotics of Dressing, on view at Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery in New York from May 16 through July 12, 2025. Featuring seven contemporary artists, including Creative Growth’s Stephanie Nguyen, Barry Regan, and Alice Wong, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the dressing room as a space of intimate ritual and personal agency.
Inspired by Martha Rosler’s iconic feminist video piece The Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), which unpacked the quiet symbolism of domestic tools, this show shifts focus to another space thick with meaning: the dressing room. Both private and performative, it is where identity is composed, concealed, and revealed.
Artists explore this theme across a wide range of materials—textiles, glass, metal, gemstones, and found objects—highlighting the gestures, furnishings, and adornments that shape how we prepare to meet the world.
