Creative Growth is proud to celebrate Sunny A. Smith, our Executive Director and CEO, who has been named to the 2026 Curious 100 by the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity. Sunny is included in the category Explorers: Traveling Beyond Boundaries, recognizing individuals who use curiosity, experimentation, and risk-taking to find new ways of addressing complex social challenges.
ABOUT SUNNY A. Smith
As an artist, Sunny’s work asks how history is shaped—who tells it, what gets remembered, and what gets left out. Working across sculpture, installation, craft, and social practice, they transform everyday objects into tools for storytelling, inviting audiences to reconsider the narratives that define our shared past and present.
For more than twenty years, Sunny has developed a practice grounded in research, material exploration, and participation. By revisiting archives and reinterpreting craft traditions, they create space for histories that are more expansive and inclusive. Their work has been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA PS1, SFMOMA, MASS MoCA, and Palais de Tokyo, and is held in major museum collections such as the Whitney Museum, LACMA, and the Hammer Museum.
That same commitment extends into Sunny’s leadership at Creative Growth. With over 25 years of experience in arts education and institutions, Sunny brings a powerhouse of experience to their role as Executive Director. Under their direction, Creative Growth continues to expand what access, visibility, and artistic careers can look like.
About Curious 100
Now in its second year, the Curious 100 highlights one hundred leaders across the United States who are using curiosity as a catalyst for cultural change. Presented by the Eames Institute, the initiative draws inspiration from Ray and Charles Eames’ belief in interdisciplinary thinking and the power of creative problem-solving.
“The Curious 100 matters because, in a time of darkness, it’s essential to amplify the people creating light. These are the thinkers, makers, and problem-solvers who are shaping more hopeful futures and building spaces for positive impact. By using this platform to highlight their work, we not only celebrate their contributions but also connect curious minds to curious problem-solvers,” - Mitzi Okou, co-founder of Where Are the Black Designers?
